Organic Food Products (abattoirs)

Legislation
The control of organic food products is regulated in Order No. 761 of August 14th 2000 on organic foods. This Executive Order conforms with the Council Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91.

Practice
The inspection is carried out as a part of the overall official Danish food control and according to instructions from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. There are general instructions and detailed instructions on certain areas for inspection.

Before inspection arrangement can be implemented a full description of the unit and the measures concerned must be contained in an inspection report. The inspection report is currently updated, e.g. by alterations in production. The inspection report is only available in Danish.

Organic animals supplied to Friland A/S are killed at abattoirs owned by Danish Crown. Danish Crown's abattoirs all have permanent control carried out by the regional inspection authorities under the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. This means that documents, accounts and physical activities cannot only be checked once a year but daily.

If requested the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration can confirm that the abattoirs are submitted to control as mentioned above. An example of Certificate of Danish Inspection can be seen here.

As a supplement to the ordinary inspection the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has a special cross-examination group. The cross-examination group accomplishes projects where operators are chosen to have all the accounts/documents for a certain period of time controlled and confirmed at the supplier or the buyer. More severe violation is sanctioned by ban on marketing the foods as organic, withdrawal of authorization or by fines after the case has been reported to the police.
