Organic Cattle

Friland's organic beef derives primarily from steers and heifers that are ready-fattened for slaughter. It is sold as fresh meat that can be cut according to the customer's wishes.

Our steers and heifers are chiefly young animals of dairy stock, satisfying specific requirements for age and fat-readiness that help guarantee quality. All steers have to be between 18 and 30 months of age, and on the EUROP scale they must score at least 3 for form, 2 to 4 for fatness and 3-4 for colour.

Another important factor we use to gauge the quality of our meat is intramuscular fat. In recent years, we have been striving to optimize intramuscular fat and incorporate it in our classification methods.

Ultimately, we believe that meat is only as good as the lives of the animals it derives from. We've worked with the Danish Animal Welfare Society to develop our own standards for organic meat.

Our key requirements for organic beef and veal production:

  • Our cattle must graze at least 150 days a year, with access to shelter and shade
  • They must have clean bedding in indoor areas, and fresh air and daylight in the cattle shed
  • The feed cannot contain any:
    -   meat- or bonemeal
    -   animal fat
    -   antibiotics, growth promoters or other drugs
    -   colouring agents or preservatives
  • If a cow or a calf does require medication, it is excluded from organic status for twice the legal exclusion period
  • All cattle must live their entire lives under organic production conditions.

All cattle supplied to Friland A/S are slaughtered at Danish Crown slaughterhouses. Danish Crown practices a BSE-safe method of slaughtering which ensures that all risk material is removed.
