10 reasons to buy organic
1. Organic farmers do not use artificial chemical fertilizers and the number of animals per hectare is lower. This minimizes the risk of polluting with nitrogen.
2. As chemical pesticides are not used in organic farming, drinking water is not polluted.
3. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are prohibited in organic farming, and in further processing of the products.
4. Only 38 out of 350 food additives are allowed in the processing of organic products.
5. In organic farming the use of antibiotics and other drugs is very restricted. This minimizes the risk of residues and their possible effects on human health.
6. The diversity of wildlife is much bigger on areas cultivated organic, which is of benefit for the natural food chain.
7. Organic farming attaches great importance to the natural behaviour of the animals. Therefore organic animals have more space and better access to outdoor areas.
8. Medical treatment of organic animals requires the withdrawal period to be twice the legal withdrawal period. If an animal receives more than 2 or a maximum of 3 courses of treatment within one year the animal must undergo the conversion period once more.
9. Organic farmers must record any treatment to the animals. The inspectors from the Danish Plant Directorate (Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries) check the records during their annual inspection and compare them to the kill dates of the animals.
10. The main principle of organic farming is that if the effect of an additive is not known the additive in question cannot be used at all. In this way human health is protected from being affected by additives not yet investigated.
