Free Range Pigs (Frilandsgris)
Free Range Pig (Frilandsgris) is Friland A/S's biggest brand. It is sold as fresh meat that can be cut according to the customer's wishes.
Free Range Pigs are produced with regard for the welfare of the animals, and the product is therefore awarded from the Danish Animal Welfare Society (Dyrenes Beskyttelse), showing that they approve the conditions under which the pigs are bred.
Some of the key requirements:
- The piglets are born in huts and have their entire lives access to outdoor areas
- Pigs must remain untethered year-round, with access to lie-down areas and lean, dry bedding
- Sows with piglets must always have access to open pastures and sheds, and the piglets must stay with the sow until they are at least 4 weeks old
- All slaughter pigs must have outdoor access
- Tails cannot be docked, nor teeth cut
- All pigs must always have access to roughage and fresh water
- Feed cannot contain:
- meat- or bonemeal - antibiotics, growth promoters or other drugs - colouring agents or preservatives
- If a pig does require medication, it is excluded from free range status for twice as long as the legal exclusion period.
